BEST IN SHOW Greek Man Stone, Smalti, 14k gold, Swarovksi Crystals 14.25 x 13 x .5 $475 Charlene Sloan | Hopkins, Laura-Winter Day's EndFIRST PLACE I love the way this painting looks in its ornate gold frame. Winter twilight is one of my favorite times of the year. The bare trees allow the landscape to open up and the muted colors of the landscape are the perfect foil for fiery and bright sunsets. I hope that this nostalgic scene offers you the comfort and peace I felt painting it. All night and all the next day the air was extraordinarily still while the snow continued. I started this painting from a window, around three in the afternoon, looking west at the snow balanced on every twig. True confession: I am using a photo of this painting with a red border as my Christmas card this year. January Oil 10 x 13 $150 Susan Sharpe |

They are begun with rough shapes and a pattern of light and dark and are then developed with layers of opaque paint and glazes. Underlayers peeking through providing interest and visual texture. Use of the palette knife in places also provides a randomness that provokes creativity and often takes me on a path I had not planned. End of Summer Oil 16 x 12 $485 Jill Garity |

Mulvena, Danny-Hay BalesA fixture near my house every Fall and Winter. Hay Bales Watercolor 10 x 11 $325 Danny Mulvena | Mulvena, Danny-SynchronicOne of several paintings done off of the little Markham Study. Got lucky and caught this little social gathering at dinner time in the snow. I toyed with the idea of changing the title several times, I got tired of explaining what the word meant. I think it conveys the feeling of the painting perfectly. I had it all to myself and spent a long time enjoying the sound of cascading water. Waterfall Acrylic 16 x 19 $400 William Walsh |
Walsh, WIlliam-The Ridge TrailI hiked a mountaintop ridge trail that was very rocky and open due to the small stunted trees on the exposed ridge. With sunlight poking through, wildflowers were in bloom everywhere and around every corner the trail dropped off steeply to the Shenandoah Valley below. The Ridge Trail Acrylic 16 x 19 $400 William Walsh | Walsh, William-Screech OwlsThe small and secretive Screech Owl lives all around our area but is rarely seen because it roosts in tree cavities during the day and comes out at night to hunt. In late winter and early spring it can sometimes be seen during the day as it pairs up for the mating season. They allow me an opportunity to experiment with compositions and color harmonies that often lead to larger paintings. They serve as something of a playground for me. Shervin, Cheri-Who's Looking at WhoWho is Looking at Who Photograph 8 x 12 $75 Cheri Shervin | Cassidy_Margaret M_Morning Sun_PhotograpOn an early morning walk in Marshall, VA, in the stillness and quiet, the sun was waking up through the clouds and fog, looking out across the field, welcoming the new day. The fence created a perfect frame for this spectacular work of nature’s art. Morning Sun Photograph on canvas 12 x 15 $100 Margaret Cassidy | Cassidy_Margaret M_Fog at Sunset_PhotogrLooking out toward the mountains, revealed the blue of the mountains giving way to both the pink and orange of sun preparing to tuck behind them for the night and to the low fog that serenely enveloped the field. Garity, Jill-Great FallsMost of my paintings are a combination of places that are both real and imagined. They are begun with rough shapes and a pattern of light and dark and are then developed with layers of opaque paint and glazes. Underlayers peeking through providing interest and visual texture. Use of the palette knife in places also provides a randomness that provokes creativity and often takes me on a path I had not planned. Great Falls Oil 6 x 8 $285 Jill Garity | Padilla, Chito-Woolgathering in SpringThis painting captures that modern-day meaning of the word “woolgathering” - indulgence in aimless thought or dreamy imagining. It was an enjoyable experience to create this piece without a set image in mind. It’s carefree as if to say, “my wits (or my mind) went a-woolgathering" - in other words, "my mind went wandering aimlessly." Woolgathering in Spring Acrylic 22 x 22 $295 Chito Padilla | Cassidy_Margaret M_Redbuds in Spring_PhoThe redbud trees, one of the earliest confirmations that spring had arrived, were in their fully glory. The grass had the light green color of spring so were a stunning contrast to the trees. The morning fog hung in the air but was beginning to give way to the bright sun. The scene caused me to lose my breath it was so perfect and peaceful. Redbuds in Spring Photograph on canvas 12 x 15 $100 Margaret Cassidy |
Ryan-Robyn-WoodlandWatcherI-MixedMediaCoWoodland Watcher 1 Mixed Media Collage 12 x 9 $325 Robyn Ryan | Padilla, Chito-KaleidoscopeThis collage of “shards” of hand-painted paper is like recreating a colorful a dream. They are random parts that do not convey much meaning standing alone but when layered and juxtaposed, they reveal a harmonious vignette. Kaleidoscope Acrylic/Mixed Media 15 x 12 $125 Chito Padilla | Block, Anne-Resting_by_the_ShenandoahPeacefully, as I set along the rolling Shenandoah River, an Egret stood, in wait of fish. I painted it en plein air. Resting by the Shenandoah River Oil on linen 8 x 10 $266 Anne Marshall Block |
Sharpe, Susan-Fauquier VillageHume, actually, but it could be anywhere in the piedmont. I like the long light of winter afternoons, and the way oak trees hold their leaves into November. I like unrest in autumn skies, with their promise of wind and freezing nights. I often use a camera and a sketch pad both. Back in the studio, I put these images together with memory and a little creative freedom to make a painting. Fauquier Village Oil 14 x 17 $200 Susan Sharpe |
