A special trip to Alaska...seeing glaciers for the first time. The translucent turquoise against the mountains and sea was breathtaking to behold, while the shards of ice from the glacier blanketing the water was impossible not to see. My inspiration came from several things when I decided to paint the Hare. I had just seen Alice in Wonderland off-Broadway. It was March and spring was in the air. Several years ago, my husband and I visited the Biltmore Estate in the Spring. The house is magnificent, but I was most inspired by the beautiful grounds and walking trails. I loved this scene with the field of daffodils against a backdrop of morning sun filtering through the trees. As a beekeeper and naturalist, honey bees provide a necessary role in the pollination of other plants, especially fruit trees. The honey bee is honored in this image. Created by a three-step reduction process, the first color is printed, then carved from the plate, the second color printed then carved away leaving the last color for an outline of the bee. The contrast of the blue-green algae within the crystal clear waters of Alexandria Bay reflecting the yellow-ocher autumn leaves was the immediate draw. I saw this as an opportunity to mimic the French impressionist painter, Claude Monet. The challenge was framing a scene that complimented the unique beauty of the algae within the splendor of the autumn leaves and the shoreline. With this piece I wanted to explore how light and spots can define a shape. It was an interesting challenge to convey camouflage without losing the subject to the background. I chose this title because cheetahs are indeed at that point in the wild. We may ever only see them in zoos or paintings. I take long walks in the woods where I live with my husband almost every morning or late afternoon. The owls call out to one another while the occasional fox trots by quietly. I am always inspired by wildlife around my home and look forward to seeing wildlife whenever I go walking or hiking. Painting nature takes me to my happy place! Whoo's There? I found peace in the forest as I walked back from the ruins at Bandelier in New Mexico. The calm of air around these old trees and the pattern of their trunks and shadows was worth capturing. That little island below the tree's shade is just the most inviting secret spot - so secret in fact, by the time my painting session had ended, the tide had come in and covered it all together!
